It was The Carpenters (apologies to anyone under the age of 35 who doesn’t know who I’m talking about – an American brother and sister duo big in the 70’s) who said “Mondays Always Get Me Down”; but you know what, that doesn’t have to be the case. With a few tweaks to what you do anyway, you can see the first day of the working week in a completely new light!
Do something weekendish today
Go to happy hour, meet a friend (you don’t work with) for lunch, have game night, go on a date or go to a fun event like a movie or festival. Our brains get in extreme Monday mode and we overdo our efforts to get “caught up” and be super efficient. On Monday, do something you would normally reserve for weekends. Your Monday brain may go into shock, but you’ll be proud.
Wear something different to work
Obviously I’m not suggesting you wear you fancy dress costume to work, but where something different. Maybe spice up your boring suit with a splash of colour. Or wear a coloured jumper or some different earrings. Wearing something you feel comfortable in actually helps you perform better in your role!
Eat something different
If you’re anything like me I can get into the rut of the same food over again at work. The same old Meal Deal just from a different store. So why not try something different (but within your budget – very important). Even if it’s adding some different fruit with your lunch. If you do want to go the whole hog and really try something new take a look at The Wild Kitchen. They provide a delivery service for your packed lunch.
Don’t cram, take stock
Rather than trying to do everything on Monday, organize and prioritize. Sort your emails and projects by level of importance. Plan out what you can do the next day and for the rest of the week. We’re not “backed up” from the weekend. Weekend is off time! You are allowed to re-assign stuff, even if it’s to yourself. Trust me this will do wonders for both your sanity and your productivity.
Change up the record
Create a brand new Monday playlist from tracks you haven’t heard in a while. Your very own personalised ‘Mix Tape’. Spotify or Apple Music can help you out there (or your usual service). A little pick me up for a Monday makes all the difference and if you get the chance dance along (like no one’s watching)!
Smile at a stranger
This is something we should do regardless of the day of the week. You don’t know what’s going on in their life and your smile could really make a difference to how their Monday is going. Get the positivity flowing because what you put out you get back; it’s a karma thing.
Plan something to look forward to
I know we should be living in the moment and not let life pass us by, but sometimes (particularly on a Monday) you sometimes need something to look forward to. My advice, don’t just plan something for a Friday night, plan something mid-week too. This could be a cinema trip or a walk with a friend to get fit and some fresh air. It’s great to have something to look forward to, and if a source of perpetual motivation.
Never forget that you’re the owner of your life and if you want something to change, you need to make it happen. Try and treat yourself to something brand new, whether it’s a food, an experience or whatever makes your heart sing and resonate with you.
All of these small things mount up and get you moving through the day with a smile on your face.
