A cluttered home makes for a cluttered mind (and spirit) so get rid!
By having a proper declutter of your living-space it will clear your mind of stress, and prevent you from feeling overwhelmed. If your home is tidy you’re more likely to feel relaxed! This is something that Marie Kondo is an expert on, and gives a refreshing Japanese look at decluttering.
If you haven’t heard about Marie Kondo or KonMari then listen up. Marie has a hit Netflix show – “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo” as well as a best seller on the subject too – “The life-changing magic of tidying…”. It’s just such a refreshing way of looking at decluttering. Rather the western way of ‘blitzing’ everything as once, Marie’s way is much more calm, methodical, almost spiritual in approach to this task.
Marie says there are six basic rules to tidying which include
Committing yourself to tidying
Tidy by category, not location
Ask yourself if it sparks you joy
How it works
Rather than going room to room tidying Marie says to do all the same items at once i.e. by category. If you take cloths as an example, get every piece of clothing you have together in one place to start. The process is really simple; you pick up one item at a time and if it sparks genuine joy with you then keep it. If it doesn’t the you discard it; but make sure you “thank” the item before discarding it.
Once you have all the clothes that you want to keep then Marie shows you how to fold them. Out with the hangers and in with the colour coordinated rectangles, designed to save space in your new minimal storage draws.
So does Marie have the answer?
There’s lots of so called tidying guru’s currently making the rounds. For instance we have the wonderful and fabulous, but greyscale, Sophie Hinchcliffe (@MrsHinchHome on Instagram) in the UK who is a fastidious cleaner and declutterer; who also gives names to her cleaning products and tools, but who I have learned a lot from.
However, Marie’s approach to decluttering provides us with a new dynamic. With Marie tidying becomes an almost spiritual experience and everything you would expect from the Japanese; and very easy to build into your own life. Whilst you might not want to be as extreme as she is, and many (would-be) hoarders would find it too much to cope with, Marie makes us think about what we actually have. How fortunate we are to have the possessions that we do, and that perhaps we hold onto things for the wrong reasons. Ultimately, it’s about being thankful for what we already have, instead of going out and buying more and ending up a tidy living-space is the bi-product of that.
But what do I do with my clutter?
“Tis better to donate than accumulate” – according to Joshua Becker in his becoming a minimalist blog . So donate your clutter to your local charity shop or charitable organisation. They can sell it to provide valuable funds for their cause. Plus in the UK you can add an extra 20% onto your donation via the government through the Gift Aid scheme. And also in the UK charities will often keep in touch and let you know how much your donation raised for them. Remember “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Of course if you’re still feeling the pinch after the festive season and are short of a few bucks, then sell your items on eBay or your local Facebook Ad page!
By decluttering you’ll create a clearer environment, which will in turn begin to reflect on your inner self. With your “path” being clean, clear and open, you will kick-start the flow of positive energy through your living-space bringing you in alignment with living your Best Life!
