“The mind is everything. What you think you become.”
– The Buddha
You often hear the health gurus using the phrase “You are what you eat”, and it’s true, you are a product of what and how much you shovel in your face. BUT had you ever stopped to think that you are also a product of what you think?
How many times have we been to job interviews or met a really nice person that could be a potential partner only to think “I’ll never get never get that job” or “They don’t fancy me, they’ll never call me back” and what do you know the genie in your life says, “your wish is my command” and you don’t get the job or they don’t call you back!
But would it have made a difference if you had thought right from the off, “Yes this is a little bit of me they love me, this is a match made in heaven…” and you genuinely believe what you were saying and thinking? I KNOW it would and the reason I say this is simple.
Take a look at Eeyore – that’s right him from the Hundred Acre Wood; friend to Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Christopher Robin and the rest of the gang. Well Eeyore is always down because he THINKS he is. He brings the mood down talking with a glum tone and will (un)happily tell anyone that nothing good ever happens to him. I’m sure we all know someone like that in our bubble; someone that never has a good thing to say about anyone or anything, and can never see the bright side of anything. The kind of person that you don’t want to be around for too long because they’re an energy vampire and they’re negative vibes might rub off onto you!
If you are one of those people that can easily get down by the state of the global community or the weather; or maybe you want to make your already super-duper life even more exciting and cool, then try this exercise on for size and see how your days goes:
- Before you get out of bed in the morning, take five minutes to imagine or intend your day ahead. The traffic is light, there’s no queue at the coffee shop, there’s a parking space right outside the office … the list goes on
- So close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, then settle your breathing into you intention and start each of your intentions with the words “I am …” so for instance “I am going to get a parking space outside the office” or “I am going catch my bus with time to spare” or “I am so lucky with the traffic being so light this morning”
- When you’re open your eyes and go about your day and see what magic happens!
And if you find yourself slipping into a negative mind-set throughout the day, take a moment to deliberately shift your thinking. Take a few deep breaths, bring yourself back to NOW and remind yourself of your positive intentions.
Of course life isn’t always rainbow and unicorns (wow I wish it were) and sad and bad stuff does happen from time to time, but if you can adopt a sunny positive frame of mind you will be able to work through these challenges much more optimistically.
After all as the comedy legend that is Billy Connolly says;
